If you run a VirtueMart store, or plan to start one, the Joomla 6 question has a short answer: keep your store on Joomla 5 for now. The rest of this page explains why, and what to do in the meantime.
Does VirtueMart work on Joomla 6?
Not the version you can download today. VirtueMart 4, the current release, runs on Joomla 4 and Joomla 5. It does not run on Joomla 6; the VirtueMart team says so on their own news page.
The VirtueMart team is building VirtueMart 5 for Joomla 6. According to the VirtueMart news page, VirtueMart 5 is already running on Joomla 6 in development. No release date has been announced.
What this means for your store
- Do not upgrade a VirtueMart site to Joomla 6 yet. If you update a VirtueMart site to Joomla 6, the shop will stop working. Take a full backup before any major update, and test on a copy of the site first.
- Joomla 5 is a supported release. It still receives security updates, so a well-maintained Joomla 5 store is not running on abandoned software.
- Keep Joomla 5 and VirtueMart 4 up to date. Staying current inside Joomla 5 is the best preparation for the move to Joomla 6 when VirtueMart 5 arrives.
- Starting a new shop? Build it on Joomla 5 with VirtueMart 4. That is the combination VirtueMart supports today.
Is there a VirtueMart template for Joomla 6?
A VirtueMart template needs VirtueMart underneath it, so there cannot be a working VirtueMart template for Joomla 6 until VirtueMart itself supports Joomla 6. Be wary of any template sold as "VirtueMart for Joomla 6" before VirtueMart 5 is released.
All 66 of our templates are built for Joomla 5 and VirtueMart 4. We will update this page when VirtueMart 5 is released.
